UARS RE-ENTRY UPDATE: NASA's UARS satellite is making its last orbits around Earth. Orbital elements just published by US Strategic Command suggest that re-entry could occur a little later than previously expected. "For now, it looks like 00:00 - 04:00 UTC on Sept. 24," says satellite tracking expert Ted Molczan, "but it could well happen even later. UARS will pass over North America and Europe several times during this period, but it will spend most of its time over oceans and sparsely populated land." Stay tuned for updates and meanwhile keep an eye out for the doomed satellite.

They reckon upto 30 pieces of this one could re-entry and have a total weight of 1.5 tonnes! Also below is link to a website which shows when re-entry events have happened and will happen

Even if NASA's 6-tonne UARS satellite does not cause any injury or damage when it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere today, there is more space junk headed our way next month. A defunct German space telescope called ROSAT is set to hit the planet at the end of October – and it even is more likely than UARS to cause injury or damage in populated areas... presenting a 1 in 2000 chance of injury.

NOW it gets exciting...

You have to wonder, they have an estimate of when it may re-enter but would those estimates be quickly scuppered if, say, this big CME that's on its way causes our atmosphere to react (expand outwards, as is normal) and drag in the satellite quicker?

now there's talk of an impact in argentina, not UARS though, probabily a gas leak although some are saying it was a russian satellite.
