Folks,
most of you remember here about the Childrens Art Competition TAS ran in conjunction with Byrne's World of Wonder?

Now it has come to a climatic finale (I hope!). We will be having a sort of presentation ceremony on Saturday October 22nd in Byrne's Tullamore superstore from 4 to 6pm. There will be TAS displays, the winning entries on display - as well as all of the almost 300 entries submitted, with music, and lots of free refreshments. Prizes will be awarded, and a photo opportunity with the press and local councillors.

CALENDARS
As you know from the thread previous, the idea was for a TAS 2006 Calendar, which is currently in print, to raise funds for TAS to build an astronomy clubhouse next to its observatory in Clonminch. TAS would like to know if any clubs or individuals would like to purchase one (or more!)? The price will be €10.00, and if people would like a calendar (within the next 2 weeks they will be available), then please send a stamped addressed A4 envelope (96 cents stamped) with a cheque to the value of €10.00 enclosed to the TAS Secretary:

Seanie Morris,
'ANSTEE',
Daingean Road,
Tullamore,
Co. Offaly,
Ireland

or you can purchase soon from any of the Byrne's stores nationwide, or Cards'n'Things, Bridge Centre, Tullamore.

Clear Skies,

Seanie.

John,
it would be nice to see you and anyone else down there if you had the time! It would be great to show the kids how much interest they have generated in this, which is great.

Conor Lynch (8 ) from Aughanrush in Killeigh
Conor McGuinness (5) from Ballycue in Geashill

UPDATE: Saturday Oct. 22nd

It is with relief that I bring news of a very successful awards presentation in Byrne's World of Wonder today! All 12 children turned up with their families. We had a Big Bear giving out sweets and candy, and havnig his picture taken with the kids. Local Councillor Richard Egan came out and co-presented the prizes with the judge of the competition, Siobhain McKenna.

A HUGE Special Thanks is extended to the Tullamore branch of Byrnes WoW for their generous prizes for the children - the cost of them, I was told, exceeded €1,000, and is very greatly appreciated. Special mention to Shane Murray (Ast. Manager) & John Cooke (Manager)

The calendar could not be made available today, but I am assured that we will have them from next Tuesday (our next meeting) - feedback suggested we could have sold over 20 today already!

In all, the kids that took part (mentioned above) deserve a big cheer for taking part, and helping to make this event a success. Congratulations to each and every one of them - each deservedly ranked 1st Place!

On behalf of TAS,

Seanie.

well done Seanie, Michael, and everyone in TAS who put a huge effort into this event. It's an idea other clubs could maybe use as well to tie in local businesses and promote interest in astronomy in their area.

all the kids put a lot of thought into their pictures with some of them having to source materials such as "eyes" for the aliens. My personal favourite was the Helix Nebula . . . again, where the artist must have mulled over quite a few ideas on what to draw for their submission.

looking forward to the calendar. It might be worth saying to IFAS clubs Seanie that you would be able to post out copies.

atb,

John

Thanks John, it was nice to see you down.

Re: the calendars, of course they will be made available to other clubs! More details will be posted up here in a few days with a couple of 'screenshots' on it!
