Scientifically valuable but non-newsworthy old projects won't help them win more budget is my guess.
Then what they need is better P.R. Jeez, don't they realise how long it will take them to send another probe to explore this region of space?!!!.......
They have the chance now and they should take it!
As for Bush and his wars....... can't he find anywhere closer to invade than Mars!....

Although it would be a pity for us not to monitor these probes, it does seem v. expensive to pay 4.2million just to tune into a satellite launched a few decades ago.
Just becaue it was launched a few decades ago dose not negate the fact that it is the first man made object collecting any data at all from this completely un-explored region of space. These probes are out on the cutting edge and just when things are getting really interesting (as they near the boundry between the Solar System and interstelar space) the shrub pulls the plug. It's stupid and short sighted IMO.

Stick it online, let researchers access and process the raw data.
It will be a long time before we can ever attempt a project like this again, and the cost will be staggering.
Data that we cant get otherwise regarding the limits of the solar systems and possibly interstallar space is priceless, in fact its free, and it would be a very sad reflection on an admistration to simply not pay a relativly small sum, relative to war budget, to just listen.
