Ya, fab display tonight alright.
People are calling this years displays
an NLC storm, they are that bright.
I have not seen NLCs as bright as these before.

Nice photos, Dave!

It was beautiful from up here in Louth too, particularly the "snake" that Dave captured in the middle.

I did a bit of viewing with my binoculars as well -- the 18x70s showed an amazing amount of structure in the snake, but at a 4° FoV you couldn't really take much of the broader display in. The wider view of my 8x30s (8.8°), on the whole, was more rewarding.

Cheers,
-- Jeff.

Nice photos there Dave. I observed the display myself around 02:30 hours on the way home from work. The filament structure was awesome in it, and the crescent Moon was rising next to it too.

Ya, that 'snake' section was very nice.
I scanned the area for ages also with binos and it was an awesome sight.

Here is an image of the same display on the 18th from Shannon.

I did a little photoshop work to get the scene to look as
close to what the eye saw.
I didn't over enhance it, in fact I could have stretched the image
to pull out more detail but I wanted to try and recreate what I actually saw.
Some of the finer detail shots show unreal detail.
I even saw active movement with the binos which was really striking.

It's clearing tonight...lets hope we see more!!!
