Irish Astronomer discovers first Irish Supernova!

Congratulations to Dave Grennan from Raheny in North Dublin who has discovered the first ever supernova from Ireland! Dave's discovery was confirmed on Monday October 4th with its official designation by the IAU as 2010IK. Dave is a member of South Dublin Astronomy Society an Astronomy Ireland and has even discovered an asteroid 2 years ago.

October ushers in darker, longer evenings and clearer nights as we head for Winter. It also heralds the arrival of some of the best constellations for astronomical targets as the nights progress so we get glimpses of Orion, Gemini and even Leo. Check out October's Sky Guide by Neill McKeown here.
Don't forget to keep up your observations and record them - even let your fellow IFAS observers know what you saw. There is also the monthly Sketching Competition with this month's target set as Jupiter. You can find more about this sketching competition here.
Whirlpool Star Party, Birr - October 8th to 10th 2010

This October sees the Whirlpool Star Party take place on the weekend of October 8th to 10th 2010 at Dooley's Hotel in Birr, County Offaly. Speakers from around the country will contribute to the programme of lectures. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

International Meteor Conference 2010 at Armagh

The 2010 International Meteor Conference will take place from September 16th to 19th at Armagh. Visitors and guest speakers from all over the world will be attending the event.
