Cosmos 2014 - 3 days of Astronomy In Athlone (April 4th-6th) was created by manic_dave
Cosmos, Ireland's Biggest Astronomy event returns for its 22nd year.
This time in the new surroundings of the Shamrock Lodge Athlone Co Westmeath.
The decision was taken to move due to Cosmos outgrowing its beloved home in Annaharvey Tullamore.
This year we have more speakers, more stands, bigger prizes and even a few surprises.
In recognition of the tough financial position we all find ourselves in we have also reduced our prices.
Shamrock Lodge is located on the outskirts of Athlone over looking miles of countryside. We have permission to turn the lights down in the car park which will provide ample space for observing. Tea and Coffee will be provided in the car park Friday and Saturday night.
For our more regular attendees we will have a dark site a short distance away with refreshments on site. Details to following in the next week.
Our Friday night program is aimed again at being more family friendly, we will have a talk from Prof Declan Molloy preceded by a Telescope demonstration by Ktech telescopes and a display of Meteorites - Including some from the Chelyabinsk Event last year. With more room than ever before we will have several displays and stations set up with all aspects of Astronomy. Anybody wishing to place a stand at the event please contact PRO Dave Connolly @ dave.w.connolly@gmail.com
Saturday will be a full program of 4 talks with Lunch, Bottle Rocket Launching and the ever popular Cosmic dinner.
Sunday will have 4 talks and finish slightly earlier to allow people make their way home.
We will publish details with maps and travel distances from all the regions of the Island in the next few days, along with times and line up.
Anyone wishing to stay in the Shamrock Lodge, please mention Cosmos when you call, we have a reduced rate agreed.

Best of luck with this Years COSMOS. It looks like a great line up. I had actually hoped to attend as I will be in Ireland for two weeks around that time but unfortunately have to leave at the end of March to avoid the Easter airfare hikes . With two people travelling it makes a big difference to ones wallet.

Special rates? I find that quite stiff. No single rooms available!
Good Morning Jouke
The rates are 79.00 per night for 2 people if you are staying 2 nights
If you are only staying one night the rate is 89.00
To book , I need a full address, phone number & credit card details to
secure
Looking forward to hearing from you

There's a few B&Bs, definitely two within about 100 meters of the Shamrock Lodge that would probably be quite a bit cheaper.

Hi Jouke,
We're looking into that for you, it's not the agreed rate so there's obviously a mistake. For anyone that may have (or will think they will) experience the same, please hold off for a day or so till one of us from MAC reports back here.
Seanie.
