Irish Astronomy (IFAS) News Update September 2014 was created by Seanie_Morris
Dear IFAS Member,
It is time for another monthly update from the Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies. Summer is closing, and soon we will have the benefit of darker skies with the richness of Winter's targets coming to greet us. Here are some items of interest.
Monthly Astrophotography Competition Continues
September's theme is on Galxies and Nebulae with a prize of a Skywatcher 5 position 1.25" filter wheel, kindly sponsored by Ktex Telescopes Ltd.:

While August's entries on The Sun are available for voting, with a prize of an Orion Starshoot Autoguider camera:

Voting takes only a click (as a logged in, registered forums user), so please take part.
Shannonside AC presents: The Burren Star Party September 26th
Hosted each September by Shannonside Astronomy Club (based in Limerick), the Burren Star Party takes place in the Poulnabrone Dolmen Car Park, County Clare, September 26th-27th 2014. This location is in the midst of the stony and secluded Burren National Park and is promoted as an actual star party. If the weather is not favorable then it will move indoors to Logues Lodge in Ballyvaughan.
IFAS Chairperson invited to Starmus September 22nd-27th Tenerife
An event like no other, IFAS Chairperson Seanie Morris has been invited expenses paid by Tour Espana to be an Irish Astronomy representative for the 6 day event. Renowned speakers include Stephen Hawking, Brian May, Richard Dawkins, Walt Cunningham, Robert Wilson, Alexei Leonov among many others.
Seanie is 1 of 3 people invited to Starmus, which celebrates "Beginnings: The makings of the modern Cosmos", and is on a press-related mission where he will get to interview one-to-one with many of the lecturers. We wish him well, the lucky bugger!
Updates will be posted on the IFAS Facebook page and on this website here:
www.irishastronomy.org/index.php?option=...id=100163&Itemid=211
Monthly Sky Guides
Keep an eye on Neill McKeon's handy Sky Guides, compiled and published month to month by himself to the IFAS boards here:
www.irishastronomy.org/index.php?option=...&catid=42&Itemid=211
(see the stickies at the top of the thread column).
Is your Club or Society hostage an event soon?
If so, please let Michael Murphy (username is michael_murphy), our IFAS Events Calendar Co-ordinator know about it and he will add it to the calendar.
That's all for this edition - keep looking up!
Seanie Morris,
IFAS Chairperson.
