Could take a while... Getting some fancy polymer to bend a bit with an electric current so it can focus light for a camera phone is a long way from scope quality. Even if it is thin, the refractive index must be high, and probably varies with the current passed though; the chances of getting all the colours focussed on one point using a large lens will take a lot of research to get right.

Could this help in very large refractors?
As the lens is ultralight, it might not sag under its own weight.

Must try to get a copy of nature to get the full paper. SOunds interesting alright. Theory seems sound enough- they've been playing with smart polymers for years. I visited a nano-tech factory recently and they've been working on some stuff that might even put this to shame))))))
