Hubble Spies a Zoo of Galaxies was created by gnason
"Gazing deep into the universe, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has spied a menagerie of galaxies. Located within the same tiny region of space, these numerous galaxies display an assortment of unique characteristics. Some are big; some are small. A few are relatively nearby, but most are far away. Hundreds of these faint galaxies have never been seen before until their light was captured by Hubble."

"There is a theory that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Another theory states that this has already happened."

Hi Gordon,
What a photo!
If you have broadband you should download the high res 25mb version of this image. It is quite stunning. Just scroll around it and see the detail, variety and sheer quantity of galaxies visible.
One of the best Hubble photos??
Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian,
I agree! I downloaded the even larger TIFF image file and it's fabulous touring around the field. Take a look at the "tadpole" attached to the spiral galaxy to the right of the centre bright red star and also the "butterfly" galaxies below the spiral to the lower right of the same red star. Beautiful!

Extraordinary image. If you look at the bottom right of the brightest star in the image there seems to be evidence of what looks like gravitational lensing present. I wonder what magnitude that star is, probably something like 22nd mag!!!

That is a really beautiful image! Never seen anything like it apart from Hubble's 28 day exposure of the Ultra Deep Field in Ursa Major almost 2 years ago.
In this photo here, is it me, or do the galaxies etc appear to spiral or radiate around the outside of the frame?? There's an optical illusion there!
