Euro50

Well, I was browsing last night …looking for different scopes designs/projects – interesting the idea of segmented mirror... www.aura-nio.noao.edu/ - 30m for a start – I think that will cool down my aperture fever for a while :)

Anyway, in the end I found this project: www.astro.lu.se/~torben/euro50/ - Euro50 – a 50meters telescope in which Ireland seems to be involved as well. Did any of you knew/know about this project?

I hadn't heard about this but it looks very cool. Good to see the NUI involved.

And is not very expesive either - an estimated budget of 573 million euro - I can build 132 of them for the price of war in iraq or a you can build one big enough to easily resovle planes - I wonder how much you can go with the new techonology - adaptative optics/segmented mirrors - Was reading somewhere (i lost the link) that americans are planning for 100m.
Also - this segmeted mirrors idea might well work in space - sending a huge mirror in pieces will be handy.
