Moving House, Storing Telescope was created by dacelonid
Hi,
I am moving house shortly after finally getting my foot on the property ladder. I was planning on buying a shed, from Argos, one of those metal ones and using it to store, amongst other things my larger 6" reflector (larger in that it is bigger than my ETX 70, which from now on is going to be stored in the boot of my car). The shed won't be an observatory or anything like that, just a convenient place to store the scope.
My question is, is there any special considerations or things I need to be aware of with storing my scope outside like this.
Cheers
Dace.

Only that its dry and waterproof, but that little bit breathable (for the sake of saving it from humidity and all that), as well as safe. Keep dust covers over the focuser and open end(s) of the tube to help protect it, and keep creepy crawlies out!

Having just paid for my first house too (yesterday), I know what you're going through right now! Best of luck on the move Dace! :)

Just make sure it doesn't get baked in the garage, they can get quite hot on a sunny day.
You dont know what that might do to the paint job/mirrors/lenses.[/quote]

Dace, common sense from the guys there, just one other thing, I have my own wooden shed in my backgarden, grand for most of the year, but if you can, store your scopes inside from November to March or so, cold weather is worse, frost, dew, cold humid days! Rain, rain rain rain.........you see what I mean. If any of this gets inside/on the scope for a long period - it's horrible cleaning it up in the spring. You'd be surprised where all the 'dirt' comes from

Indoors is best in the winter.

ah yes the rain.
I remember reading somewhere that there are some types of mildew that can grow on optics and can permanently damage the anti-reflective coatings on lenses, just another thing to look out for.

See that is what I am afraid of, that the temperature in the shed will fluctuate too much over the course of a day, never mind a year. Guess I will just have to be careful.
