Are we on for a cold winter this year?? was created by dave_lillis
Hi,
I was listening to the radio yesterday and it mentioned that some meteorological model predicts a cold winter, winds form the north etc...
Does this mean clear skies and frosts for 3 months ??
or are we talking snow storms.
Is there any other hobby out there that prays for frost

C'mon, just because you got lucky last Christmas!
I, for one, would like to see more frigid nights, as they are the best for clarity when out observing. Fingers crossed!

Not sure about home but its hot in New York at the moment. People here saying that its the hottest September that they remember[1]. You should need a jumper around here at this time, instead its shorts and t-shirt weather.
Cheers,

The met office are predicting a very cold winter and heavy snowfall. This means cold cold clear nights(amazing seeing and transparceny) with the hard frosty ground beneath your feet. Followed by a heavy snow shower and a hot cup of Cadburys Chocolate! Go's down well for me......

Just got this preliminary report for the UK (and prsumably Ireland) from Metcheck:
The link between Autumn snow cover and the forthcoming winter is complex. In short, the more snow across the Eurasian plateau from May to September, results in less energy for the Northern Hemisphere and blocked, cold winters are common.
At present, only half the snow data is available, which is why the winter forecast isn't released until October, but early indications, with the Eurasian plateau about 823,000 sq km down on the amount of snow we would normally see, means that a blocked, colder than average winter, is looking less and less likely this year
Cheers
Dave
