I just saw a note on an e-circular that anthony murphy (of this board) noted it too. Hopefully it turns out to be a newbie.

SOHO COMET
Further to the observation of a SOHO Comet reported by Anthony Murphy of
Ireland, Jonathan Shanklin, Cambridge, relays the comet was first
detected by Hua Su, with numerous other people noting it.
See:

and cfa-www.harvard.edu/mpec/K05/K05S70.html
He adds that it looks as if the comet is fading away, though it still
had a tail when it entered C2.

When did Anthony first report it and what time was on the C3 image at the time? I was wondering because i didnt see the name on the SOHO comet reporting webpage?

SOHO COMET (MURPHY)
David Moore, Astronomy Ireland, Dublin has announced morning 09.23UT Thursday 29 September that Anthony Murphy had noted a comet heading for the Sun on the latest LASCO C3 images on the SOHO site.

Latest movies are at sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/mpeg
Latest stills are at sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/
realtime-images.html

Apparently, this discovery was not reported on the SOHO website and therefore the timing can only be confirmed by Anthony Murphy himself.

I suspect that Anthony Murphy contacted David Moore of Astronomy Ireland, who then contacted Guy Hurst. Anthony may not have known the protocols of registering a discovery officially.

Martin you could contact him to get precise info on this matter if you wish.
