Hi All

Hope your backs have all recovered from the mammoth talk at the last
meeting :-) (did I really talk for that long?) The skies have not
been co-operative since then but this week looks set to be excellent
for observing and imaging. If you have any questions on deep sky
astrophotography be sure and post them to the EAAS Forum.

Venus has appeared in the southeastern pre-dawn sky. Paul Evans, our
treasurer, has observed it at only 2% illumination and hopefully
during this week of good weather we will be able to image it. Post
your observing reports to the EAAS Forum.

For the latest information on observing the planets check out our
Stargazers page.

----

Our next meeting will be on the 6th February for the annual Andrew
Trimble Memorial Lecture. Our speaker will be Professor Alan
Fitzsimmons (QUB) and his subject - "Deep Impact….The Story So Far".
Plan to attend and invite your friends for what will be a most
interesting topic.

I just got word of this...

Monday 23rd January BBC1 Northern Ireland 7:30pm

Inside Out
Joe Lindsay discovers more about a phobia which affects one in six
of us, we go star-snapping without the paparazzi in County Down and
meet the Moravians of Gracehill.

----

Looks like we are in for some very settled weather. There is a big
high going to sit on top of us for the next week and this will bring
fairly clear skies. We may have a problem with high cloud or mist
but it is looking good so far. Cancel all evening classes and get
your scopes at the ready. This week is the one we have been waiting
for. Get out early before the humidity gets up.

----

3-day Solar-Geophysical Forecast issued Jan 21 at 22:00 UTC
Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low. The
increased magnetic complexity in Region 848 will likely result in C-
class activity.
Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to
be quiet to unsettled on 22 January. Occasional active periods are
possible on 23 and 24 January as a coronal hole high speed stream
rotates into geoeffective position.

----

The IAA will be having their Stranmillis lecture this Wednesday
evening at 7:30pm. Dr S Lowry QUB is speaking on "Telescopic
observations of comets and asteroids".
