how about shuting down the option?
I use my own webserver or like Martin host it on a free server like imageshack or tinypic.
Small avatars are well suited for that too, and avatars is whats beeing loaded the most i guess from your webserver.
Or maybe start looking for sponsors?

do we keep them below 100k ? or 150?

To avoid contributing to bandwidth gluttony, I started keeping all my images on my own website and just posting the links. If the image is 'included' as an image in the body of the post, even if the image is 'off-site', is that good for IFAS bandwidth?
