What about an OS map? Or you could pop down to the council ofices and request a map of your area. pretty accurate.

The GPS accuracy only returned to normal some months later. Galilleo (Europe's own GPS system) will deliver better than 2m accuracy when it comes on line much to the consternation of the US military... they are not happy bunnys and are hopping mad over it! Excellent!!!!

Actually you can get 2m accuracy (or better occasionally) around Ireland now with EGNOS enabled GPS units (WAAS-enabled mode) www.esa.int/esaNA/SEM2VV1DU8E_egnos_2.html

You know its working when your GPS has D's in the satellite bars.

You still need to convert that from IE1965 to WSG84, which have a difference of 50m or so. Long story... -49m in the easting and , -23.4in the northing to be exact. code to calculate for those interested is at cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/iegridcon...=1.6&view=markup

Depends on exactly how arracturate you want. 50m is fine for most applications. For Geocaching you need accuracy to a meter or so ideally :-)

There's also a converter available on the OSI website, but free registration is required first.
www.osi.ie/
Choose GPS services, sign up and choose the converter link. Couldnt tell you how accurate it is.

About 5cm better than mine. I'm using a simplified algorithm, I guess they are not. My tests seem to be within 2cm either side of the OSI trig points.

www.nearby.org.uk/coord.html can also convert to & from most things. Though for Irish coords you need to use www.nearby.org.uk/coord.cgi?fixed=1 to get around the offset issue. Also Barry has created a google earth overlay of the OSI grid for google earth www.nearby.org.uk/google/Gridlines-ir.kml.pl which is kinda cool.

If people really want to know more get a strong coffee and read
www.osni.gov.uk/downloads/Making%20maps%20GPS%20compatible.pdf
and
www.osi.ie/pdf/irish_grid.pdf
