What would you like to see in the Southern Hemisphere? was created by lunartic_old
Hi all
I posted this question some months ago on the Cloudy Nights forum and it was a lot of fun reading the replies, so I thought I would post it here and see what the response would be.
For me personally the following is a list of objects I would like to see:
Crux
The Megallanic Clouds
Omega Centauri
For fun It would be interesting to see Orion doing a cartwheel across the sky.
And my lifetime ambition is to see the Southern Milky Way from the Outback as I can only imagine that the view would be awesome.
Let me know what you think.
Paul

Having had the chance to live in Australia for 3 years I can tell you that the skies are awesome. The milky way and magellanic coulds glow under a dark sky. Eta Carina, the jewel box in Crux and omega centauri (which makes M13 look pretty dim) are just a few of the sights to see. You do need to get a good bit away from the big cities to capture the really dark skies. It is surprisingly easy to find your way around the sky.
It is very strange to see Orion upside down and the moon looks a bit strange the first time you see its phases. The only downside is that you get eaten alive by the mozzies unless you use plenty of "RID".
Worth a trip just to see the skies (but plenty of surfing, diving ,cheap golfing, fishing and good skiing available).

Centaurus A
Sagittarius overhead!
Eta Carina
NGC 2442 in Volans (The Meathook Galaxy)
.... i could go on all night.
The other interesting question is what would an aussie say in answer to the same question about the northern hemisphere. E.g. from Darwin, Ursa Major doesnt get any higher that Orion does here. Today M81 transitted under 10degrees in the north. I'd say the M81 group would be high up their list.
Living on the equator might be nice, although polar aligning would be a right pain! Even getting a mount that works could be a chore, though saying that making a mount that pivots on one level axis could be kind cool.

Sagittarius and Omega Centauri would be good alright. Best though would be just a naked eye view of the sky and seeing an entire new side of our universe.
