An aurora from space must be amazing! I know they bug the crap of our more northern (circumpolar) friends on the ground, but sheese, we don't get enough of them ourselves!

if you look at the aurora up close you see what look like little glowing grains, or almost like fireflies. is this due to photo processing or can that phenomena be explained?

I think it's all part of the show. There is quite a lot to do with aurora than we know or understand. Occasionally, even 'sprites' are seen. These are like small bolts of lightning shooting up from the lower atmosphere. There are more often seen during thunderstorms from space.
