Sorry I've been away for a while, Did anybody hear of this, it would be cool if a supernova actually happens in our own milkyway, afterall, it's 400 years since the last one! I'm going to send an e-mail to find out exactly what parts of the sky these recently happened.

Hi Keith.
Unfortunately, they're extragalactic, at high redshift. Otherwise we'd have spotted the supernovae by now and we'd have detected a large burst of neutrinos if one had gone off nearby. The NASA press release was rather badly written, I have to admit.... very, very vague on where these things go off. Thankfully for us though, GRBs tend not to happen a lot though in the low-z universe!!!
Here's some images of the optical afterglow for GRB 040827.

Clear skies.

Thanks for the info. Brian, pity the visual part is not nearby
Ah well, I've got hopefully about 40-50 years left to see one!!!
