Poor people, It was maybe sulphur alright, which is not nice stuff. It's rare to hear of this event alone, nevermind the side affects of those gases...

Accroding to the Bad Astronomer it may not be a meteor, it could be space debris and that can have all sorts of nasty chemicals in it.

Meteor folks are very sceptical about this. they believe its more lilkely to be volcanic activity.

The coca leaves may indeed make them think it was meteor...
