"400 prominent scientists disputed man made global warming"

Lots of solar and gamma ray blaming going on in that.

You have to wonder about reports like this. Firstly they cite PatrickMoore, not really a qualified expert in these matters to begin with, secondly they cite him writing in the Sun! www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/we...ts/article214154.ece

A lot of the research behind this report seems to be from typying 'global warming' into google news!

I'm afraid I've become deeply cynical about it too. There is obvious scaremongering and bad science being given out as part of the stampede for research funding and the truth of it that there is plenty we don't know. One can easily come to the conclusion that observations are being publicised that happen to fit the theory whilst those that don't fit the theory are being either silenced or rubbished. For example, what about the observed warming of Mars? Doesn't this support the solar or gamma ray caused theories?

There are many very, very good reasons for moving away from fossil fuels for energy but it does seem we're being frightened into looking at alternatives by a big bogey man as we've not shown any signs of doing it voluntarily. It may be that we will need to rely on Nuclear Fission to get us to the point, perhaps 50 years away, where Fusion can be made viable.

I once read a SF short story about a planet where the development was such that Uranium was easily available and the coal and oil was much deeper, and when they'd burned all the Uranium they considered going over to coal and oil and considered the effect on the environment and decided it was just far too dangerous to consider!

Whatever the reason it's happening we should not contribute it causes, it's not in out best interests as a species.

It is quite likely that there are many sources contributing to the warming that is occurring right now and there is a theory about a solar output supercycle that happens over centuries that is supported by the historical and archeological records for the past 2,000 years. It's also possible, though I haven't seen anything that addresses it, that the Earth's core may have a similar cycle of variation in its heat and could be a contributing factor. We can't do anything practical to affect such sources. What we can do is modify our behaviour so that we don't contribute so much. The use of hydrocarbons is just one aspect. The replacement of green areas, which absorb heat and make use of it in the growing process (and thereby take carbon OUT of the atmosphere), with paving and buildings, the reliance on air conditioning in office blocks and failure to design and insulate buildings effectively all contribute to atmospheric warning and in many cities our activities generate a microclimate that is at odds with the natural local environment, not unlike the localised weather patterns we find on ocean islands such as those in the Azores and Madeiras.

We are a part of the problem and we are the only part that we can realistically control. What we don't need in the media's bite-sized lights is a bunch of scientists playing to the press by presenting just one uncontrollable facet of the total information package available instead of presenting a comprehensive picture and clearly identifying which parts we can control and which we cannot. It's inappropriate, unprofessional and irresponsible. These people, some of whom probably rely on vested interests for their funding, are not true scientists by any definition that I can understand. They are mercenaries who don't care about any collateral damage they may cause.

The planets wobble in space explains it quite well. We've a moon which stabalises things.

The Milankovitch cycles on Earth (ie Earths wobble) does show a correlation with temperature, as do various other solar and orbital cycles. However none of them combine to show anything like the observations of the last hundred years or so.
