thanks for both replies. As for the circumference of our galaxy...sorry must have being thinking about another galaxy
I know it's probably all a little complicated, and if someone gave me the answer - I might not understand it. I have often wondered how fast our spiral arm was rotating around the centre of the galaxy.
Now, nobody wreck your head trying to get an answer, but It would not surprise me if someone out there had that number to hand - like i said just curious :

assuming we are talking about the earth moving in a circle relative to the center of the galaxy then its (26000 ly *2*PI) / 220,000,000 years
Its the converting to MPH thats the annoying bit Should be of the order of half a million miles an hour.

We are also moving with the Sun around the center of our galaxy and moving with our galaxy as it drifts through intergalactic space!
Which is what I thought the question was about.

if the above figures give you the approximate circumference of the galaxy i.e. X3 - then how fast are we (earth) going in MPH ?? Confused
This is a trick question. You see to calculate the speed at which we are moving it all depends on which way the smoke is blowing.
