CANES VENATICI was created by pj30something
Just wonderin how do i pronounce "Chara"? It's one of the stars in Canes Venatici.

CANES VENATICI~~~The hunting dogs. Chara meaning "joy" in Greek and “dear friend” in Gaelic.

The reason i ask is because i'm gonna be getting a new dog in a couple of weeks and i want to name it Chara. I wanted to name it after a star that had canine connections, so Chara seemed fitting.

Do i pronounce it the Gaelic way? Does the Greek pronounciation sound the same?

Thanks.

Hey. In Greek, it is pronounced like Hara, with the emphasis on the ra, like haRA. The "ha" is sort of pronounced from the throat, kinda like the irish/scottish word "ach"

Thanks for that. I was kinda thinking either way (Greek or Gaelic) it sounds the same, like as you said "Ha-Ra" with the "throaty bit". The C is ALMOST silent.

Can't help with exact pronunciation but Chara is Latin not Greek. R H Allen quotes Chara as "Dear to the heart of her master" and Asterion as "Starry", their names first appearing in modern forms in the Prodrumus of Hevelius. References I have have say Chara is derived from the latin word for edible root.

Hi,

There is yet another Chara (or rather CHARA) in astronomy.
This is the long-baseline interferometry operated at Mount Wilson.
