Chara is a greek word, the word for joy. Chara is also a latin word, the word for a root as you said. However I don't think they are derived from one another, we can't tell how long they have been used. And in general it is said that Greek is the older language, but then Latin has older written records, so it's hard to say.

Can't help with exact pronunciation but Chara is Latin not Greek. R H Allen quotes Chara as "Dear to the heart of her master" and Asterion as "Starry", their names first appearing in modern forms in the Prodrumus of Hevelius. References I have have say Chara is derived from the latin word for edible root.

And the stars were mainly named by the Greeks and Arabs. So its a safe bet that the star Chara was named by the Greeks.

Ar Euronymous says, it is Greek( χαρα).the ch sound being hard rather than soft, as in Christ, as the letter responsible is chi.(X)
Those religious among you may have noticed the XPI in churches...the Greek diminutive which stands for Christ.
Also note similar words like charisma.
Where's Antonis when you need him?
