Never heard of the Collinder catalogue before. Is this an attempt by someone to go further than Messier and put his name to it, like Caldwell?

No, It was part of a doctorial thesis by a swiss astronomer studying open clusters early last century.
I'll bet you are familiar with a lot of the more famous ones
Cr 399 - coathanger
Cr 70 - Orions Belt
Cr 69 - Orions Head
Cr 189 - Beehive
There are over 400 in total and from what I remember about being out under a cloudless sky with a scope the ones I stumbled accross were striking.
