I think there is a privately run facility on Las Palmas if memory serves me correctly. Unfortunately I don't have the web site or mag advert to hand. I fancy going over there myself, probably in the autumn.

I was on a holiday in Gran Canaria a number of years ago,
For me, its a description of paradice, great skies, and hot hot weather.
It was a non astronomy holiday, but I saw more of Scorpious then you can see here.
Apparently there is a big scope on the top of the mountian there, maybe you could visit it ???
I'd go back in a flash..

Thanks for that guys. Seems the Canaries sky is protected by a special "law of the Sky" established in 1988 that restricts light polution and radio-electrical interference. La Palma seems to be a mecca for astronomers with world fambous high altitude observetries erected on the hills.
For some strange reason my faimly doesen't seem to share my entusuam and want to keep away from La Palma (aparently its considered the worlds hillest island) and stay near the warm beaches. Although a deckchair on the beach at night with a pair of bino's in one hand and a Margereta in the other dont sound too bad.
