I thought I heard this mentioned a few years ago myself. At the time, the real reason Ireland was scrapped was its distance from the equator - the closer to it the better.

Nah the location fits perfectly into the MERLIN & European VLTI array. If a new scope was to be added in Birr it would fill some gaps that they have in the interferometry.
I cant remember the details, though they were outlined at COSMOS a couple of years back, when whatshisname from Jodrell Bank was over.
