Any strange 'fireballs' lately? was created by Seanie_Morris
This morning I was on Midlands 103 talking about the ongoing solar storm which we are clouded out for and recent sightings of more 'fireballs'. I use the fireball term loosely because a couple living near Clara in Offaly claimed to have seen one for 4 weeks. My guess is that it was Venus.
Some people have claimed to see more fireballs lately in the skies. I reckon they have - but only because of the episode a few months back where the 'giant' Irish Fireball of 2010 was seen and thus made Joe Public more aware to keep looking up in the skies. This means people are noticing brighter meteors more often but don't know just how common an event they really are.
Has anyone else either just from chatting or through their local club come across more fireball sightings lately?
Seanie.

Not really Seanie, I think that more people are now aware that this can happen in our night skies, and I think that anything they see that they don't quite understand is reported as a 'fireball' anything from Venus as you say to chinese lanterns, the ISS and so on...
but that doesn't mean that they are not happening, I thnk more scarcely than reported
Keith..

Yeah, that's what I was thinking Keith. Even a rare and overly bright Iridium or similar satellite event often gets labelled as a fireball lately.

I saw a nice fireball on june 16th here in Shannon
at aprox 12 midnight.
(I was putting out the bins for the morning)
I noticed the shadow of me and the bin moving on the ground at the
side of the house then instincitvly looked around and up to see an
lovely blue into green fireball just lower than overhead..
there was broken clouds but it lit them like a firework from above.
It was fairly slow moving also and I think it broke up just as it went behind the neighbours house.
(but not sure)
If I didnt know anything about astronomy...
I'd have been freakin out...
UFO stuff for sure.
