Clearer skies in NSW?? was created by johnomahony
Hi

Yet again I am on the move. This time relocating to Sydney in a few weeks time for a better job opportunity and hopefully clearer skies. The weather in Melbourne hasn't been much better than Ireland recently-in fact, it sucks!!!! I am already looking for a new club to join that has a dark sky site not more than an hour or so away. The astronomical society of NSW looks interesting as they have a site in the blue Mountains and also a very dark sky site about 2.5 hours away for the weekends. My third club in 15 months! I have to settle down !!

If you keep heading futher south, you'll eventually reach the south pole observatory.
I hear it's quite dry there...

Hiya,
I'm just back from a holiday in Aus with the in-laws and I can certainly vouch for the clear skies in NSW. We were staying out in the sticks about 40mins west of Coffs Harbour (I believe the sky around the Blue Mountains can be fantastic also)and I was just blown away by the amount of stars you can see, even with the naked eye. I had no idea what I was looking at, other than the southern cross, but it was great. I made my first attempts at photography with a barn-door tracker and I was amazed with the results (even with a 3 min exposure). I'll post them up on the astrophotography section asap, to see what you pro's think.

Enjoy the clear skies Down Under.

Stephen

I didn't realise you were a member of the traveling community John. What line of work are you in out there? Laying Tarmacadam or selling generators??

Howaya boss
We never really settled in Melbourne weatherwise or jobwise so when a great job and a much better package came up in Sydney we decided to give it another go.
The skies are clearer and the fishing is just as good;) . Expensive place to live though.
When I am back in Ireland I'll have to give a talk on all the various astroclubs I have joined.
