3D images

Folks - I figured out a way of generating 3-D night-sky images.

Last night, I took images of M51 in both B and R filters. I processed them carefully and reduced them to two single very clean images (dark subtracted,flat-fielded etc). I then used the "merge" function in MaximDL and grabbed my trusty red/blue 3D glasses.

I have to say, the image was stunning - real 3D popped right out of the screen. I've never seen M51 like that before.

If anyone wants the process I followed, let me know.

At over 250 Mb, not really. But I can burn it onto a CD/DVD if you post me one...

Naahh, I just use blue highlighter on the left side of my monitor and red highlighter on the right half.
Works a treat every time...

On a more serious note, I have done pseudo-3d images a couple of times before.
It works best with images of a galaxy and plenty background stars.
1. Copy and past the image adjacent to itself.
2. Leave left image alone.
3. Move galaxy on right image by a few pixels.

Example attached of M51.
If you can cross your eyes slightly, you will see foreground stars with background galaxy.
