TAS Observing Session (Nov 8th) - Report

This was just a small affair, as to many it was a worknight. But 4 of us headed out to The Site around 11pm. 3 binoculars and an ETX-70 were all we had. Patchy cloud for a while, but after 1am, it really cleared up! Those of us there: Seanie Morris, Leo Daly, William ??, David Daly.

Favourite targetswere Mars, M42 (Orion Nebula - amazingly sharp detail in the ETX), Saturn & Titan, The Beehive, The Pleaides, Perseus Double Cluster, Ring Nebula (M57), and just casually sweepnig the sky when the bateries dies in the ETX!

Many Taurid and many more sporadic meteors were seen. A very bright Ursid fireball, just off to the left of the first star in The Plough's handle, about 10 degrees long, estimated magnitude of -8, occured at 00:57hrs. Leo and Seanie saw it visually, and think they heard the faint 'boom' a couple seconds later. David and William, their backs turned, saw the illuminating flash against the sky! At 01:43hs, it was decided to break up and go home.

It didn't end there though. On the way home, Seanie saw a very long, c. -10 magnitude fireball blaze down Orion's left flank for about 25 degrees at 01:50hrs. David, from his location about 9 miles away, also travelling home, also saw it. Scared the bejaysus out f him, he said to Seanie on the phone a minute later!

Not a bad short observing session really!
