Bloomsday Astronomy?

Hi,

There is an article in S&T this month about the Lyrids and Ulysses. Which gave me an idea (do stop me when you had enough of my ideas!)

Since this is the 100th anniversary, we should mark the event! When I say we I am looking at John Flannery and John O'Neill in particular!

The 16th of June is a Wednesday, and it won't get even near dark till around 11pm, but at least there is no moon. There will be no planets to speak of and the light pollution and twilight will rule out seeing anything other than stars, but with some decent sized telescopes we should be able to show off some star clusters.

Location is the next problem. Sandymount is handy but not very Joycean, but we would be the next tower down in Sandycove, beside the Joyce museum. The museum itself closes at 5pm normally, but given the night thats in it they may be staying open a little longer, and would be interested in promoting the event.

Thoughts? Comments? Abuse?

Sandymount IS Joycean. Stephen Dedalus walks along the strand earlier in the day, and looks at some ships coming into Dublin port, while Leopold Bloom watches some fireworks there later while masturbating! Now I'm not suggesting that we watch the stars and ... :twisted:

Either way, Sandymount would be a fine location, both for access and the Joyce theme. Sandycove might be better, but is not as user friendly. great idea Al, and a great way to get media attention.
