The next meeting of the Galway Astronomy Club will take place on Bank Holiday Monday at our new venue,The Claddagh Hall, Nimmo's Pier, Claddagh Quay, Galway at 8pm.. Our speaker will be by Prof. Mark Bailey, who is the present Director of the world renowned Armagh Observatory. His talk will be entitled "The Origin of Comets & the Oort Cloud".
Professor Bailey obtained his PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 1978 with a thesis on the evolution of active galactic nuclei. In recent years his research has focused on areas closer to home: the dynamical evolution of comets, asteroids and meteoroid streams; solar system - terrestrial inter-relationships; and aspects of the comet and asteroid impact hazard. The asteroid (4050), discovered in 1976 by Claes-Ingvar Lagerkvist, was named Mebailey in March 1990 for his work on the dynamics and origin of comets. He is the co-author of The Origin of Comets.
