TAS Observing Night - Mon Oct 25th was created by Seanie_Morris
Hi all,

TAS will be hosting its first Observing Night of the season next (Bank Holiday) Monday, October 25th.

This is free, and open to everyone wishing to come. The plan is to meet at our usual meeting spot - the car park outside Haven Hire Depot/Tullamore Furnishings in the Tanyard, shortly after 8:30pm, then follow the leader out to the Observatory.

Map

Bring binoculars and/or telescopes, warm soup if you intend on staying long, and wrap up warm!

If anyone requires a lift, please let me know and arrangements will be made.

If the weather is not in our favour, then we may have an open discussion group, or talk about the latest news etc. in the Order of Malta Training Room - refreshments provided.

If you require any more information, please let me know.

Clear Skies (I hope!),

Hi Seanie,

A couple of ifs here......

If your weather is bad on the 25th.....and our weather is good and/or

If your group would like to experience leading edge remote astronomy in
the comfort of some warm cozy pub or similar accommodating location
with an internet connection with a suitable computer........and/or

If you are able to meet the time zone difference...(Since you are about
7 hours ahead of us - (the observatory's International time zone is
-7UT) The observatory is open from about 4UT through 14UT this time of
year....

We would be willing to host some observing time at no charge out of
respect for fellow astronomers in Ireland and as a token of International goodwill and fellowship.

Please see link to a sample image done this morning below:

Seanie,
I hope the skies are clear for yee, we gave up along time ago trying to plan observing sessions in advance
Back in the days when Tony was observing director, we used to log all the observing sessions, and at the AGM would give a brief rundown of the previous 12 months, and they all sounded like

"5-10 members went to site, .... brought scopes, ...... clouded out"
all very derpessing and demoralising.

Over the last 3 years or so we've adoipted the drop and run policy, and our last session (2 weeks ago) we had 12+ people with a 12"SCT, 2x8"SCTs, and an ETX. 2 lads didnt make it due to one thing and another, I'm looking forward to seeing through their 10"SCT scopes.
One of the guys who did come along left his 9.25"SCt at home, he had no way of bringing it along :x .

Were thinking of changing the club name from SAC to the SASCTC club
Lets hope the night of the lunar eclipse next week is clear :?

Wow!

thanks for the input guys! Much appreciated!

Arnie, I have thought of that idea as a back up, but only playfully! I have to see if there is such a place willing to give us use of their phone line for an hour or two. It is a great offer, and a very generous contribution on your part to offer it free to the club for this once-off.

As we have been exchanging in emails, it is quite a simple system to use, and does not require a broadband-or-similar connection. I have yet to give it a go personally, but I hope to do so by the end of next week, as I have a few course exams at the moment.

Folks should check out his website!

Dave, that is something Mike actually mentioned to us at the committee meeting on Monday night last. We are thinking this might be a great idea, and we have one person in the club in mind to ask. We would of course keep the Observing Nights (albeit only 5) that are already on the calendar and 'out there'. As I found out at 4am this morning when I got home from 'work', the sky was brilliantly clear, after all the rain that fell yesterday evening! I wish some one was with me to see the -5 Mag Leonid pass beneath the Beehive cluster! Amazing!
