Folks,
According to Jay Anderson , there are two really good places to see the transit from a climate point of view - the north-eastern Sahara desert (stretching into the Arabian desert), and NE Namibia / Botswana / Angola.
So, you can choose between a cheap (but hot) trip to (say) Egypt, or a more expensive (though cooler, as it will be winter) trip to south-west Africa.
My money is on Egypt.

hi Chris,
Egypt certainly is tempting as Explorer's are doing a good package for just 400 Sterling for a week at the resort in the Sinai area. It'd be hard to beat that for something that's "all in".
Crete was another possibility 'cause of the other sights to see on the island such as the Samiri Gorge, etc.
it looks as if no-one fancies taking a chance on Ireland because of the uncoperative weather!
would love to get a view of the southern sky again though . . . sigh . . .

£599 (for a package to see the pyramids too) I assume is per person sharing. That works out a bit expensive since I'm trying to convince girlfriend to come along...

Hi,
Egypt is way to hot. An Egyptian told me that the area the tour is going to is fairly hot so I think I would probably collapse with dehydration before I got to see the transit!
Looking at the map and other cloud free areas, the nicest spot seems to be Sicily. Anyone got any thoughts on Sicilly in early June? From wunderground.com it seems they had a cloud free June 2003 which would indicate a good probability of clear skies. Theres always the possibility of the weather doing a `Cornwall` though!
6 months to learn Italian!
Cheers,
