Outreach event in Larch Hill 6 December 2008 was created by bertthebudgie
I met up with a group of 17 Girl Guides from Raheny ages from 10 -13 while on camp in Larch Hill to help them all get their Astronomy badges. It was a wonderfully clear night and nobody seemed to mind the cold as a crisp layer of frost began to form around us on the ground. A special thanks to the staff and leaders at Larch Hill who kindly allowed the lights over the car park to be temporarily switched off to enable us to get the best views.

First up was a view of the moon which always draws a thrill with its crators and terminatior. As there are no planets on view at this time we spent time on some of the deep sky objects on view. We got some good views of M81 and M82, M1, M37, Double Cluster etc..

There was time for lots of questions as everyone, guides, leaders and parents alike, formed an orderly que to have their own look through the scope and chatted amongst each other over what they had seen. The double cluster "looked like sparkling diamonds, a girls best friend". M37 looked like "salt and pepper". On the way, we were also graced with a number of shooting stars which also drew a gasp from all in the crowd.

Afterwards everyone had to have their little astronomy test to show they knew where the plough was to qualify for their badges. One extra badge means a lot you know!!!!

But one hopes that this night could be the beginning of something that will stay with them no matter where they find themselves in future. An appreciation and wonder at the beauty of the sky and where we are in the Universe, the most precious thing of all.

Excellent report David and I am sure you and the guides were
as icy as TAS and I were down in Kildare.

One person did this outreach and many young people had an experience never to forget.
Just think what we can all do together in IYA 2009 if we make an effort.

Great stuff David
