Kaguya impact and LCROSS was created by dmcdona
Folks - the JAXA lunar satellite Kaguya hopefully impacted the lunar surface at about 18:25 today. I've yet to see any reports or images (it would have been visible from Australia, New Zealand and Asia, weather permitting) so we're not really sure yet.
NASA's LRO, with LCROSS aboard will launch next week and will hopefully complete the deployment of two impact probes into the lunar surface around the first week or two of October. Hard to tell if it will be visible from here - it'll sure be visible from the USA - but well worth popping into the diary.
For your amusement, here's a piece I did for RTE1 Drivetime tonight:

p.s. first time I've been called an "Astronomist" - ahhh bless

Very good - I also like the name Astronomist (twice said).
Interestingly (or not) I joke with people that I "astronomise" in the evenings. I think this could catch on...

Nice one Dave.
I'm surprised some images have not made it onto the web yet.

Well done Dave!
I didn't know about the JAXA probe at all, goes to show how much I've been keeping myself in the loop lately. What was the expected sight from Earth to have been? A small bright dot of impact on the lunar surface?
Seanie.
