Hi all,

Saturday September 18th is billed as International Observe the Moon Night. This would be a good event for clubs to mark a club event around another international date whilst also reintroducing your club the Joe Public (as most clubs restart their seasons in September following the summer break). It doesn't have to be just about observing the Moon either - you can talk about exploration, history, geology, folklore and more.

Further information about the date can be found here:
observethemoonnight.org/

If your club is/will be thinking about hosting an event make sure to let the rest of us know here!

The Moon will be a waxing Gibbous that night.

Clear Skies,

Seanie Morris.

Sorry for the late post , was on holidays, should have put this out weeks ago, no internet in West Cork.

I will be with the IAS on Sept 17th in Sandymount.

On September 18th I hope to hold a Moon observing night for InOMN on the prom in Bray Co Wicklow.
The prom gets hundreds of people out walking every evening. Was thinking of starting early maybe around 7pm so as to catch as many families as possible.

As National Cordinator for Astronomers Without Borders I am calling on all IFAS clubs to join in this
global event in your own villages and towns. In IYA 2009 IFAS clubs excelled in public outreach , this continued with Global Astronomy Month last April. Let's grow this trend by sharing the moon with the public one more time on the International Stage.

International Observe the Moon Night – September 18, 2010

SEEING THE MOON... in a whole new light!

Professional and amateur astronomers, astronomy clubs, planetariums, science centers and all astronomy enthusiasts worldwide are invited to celebrate Earth's celestial companion, the Moon, on Saturday, September 18, 2010.

International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) follows on the great success of lunar missions in 2009. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has already sent back more close-up images and digital data in its first year orbiting the Moon than any other planetary mission in history. In an unprecedented search for water below the Moon's surface, Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) crashed into the Moon’s south polar region with the world watching.

InOMN builds on NASA's first celebration of these historic missions during the International Year of Astronomy 2009. Now, Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) is partnering with NASA missions and centers, along with other institutions, to bring the excitement of observing and learning about Earth's closest neighbor in space to the worldwide public – putting the "International" into InOMN.

“InOMN is a community-based effort where everyone can share the excitement of lunar exploration with the public by hosting their own InOMN events,” said Mike Simmons, Founder and President of Astronomers Without Borders. “Public telescope observing events, lectures, school presentations and workshops, and even online events like TweetUps are already being planned,” adds Simmons.

Join the celebration. Get others looking up and seeing the Moon...in a whole new light!

Astronomers Without Borders

Astronomers Without Borders projects promote sharing, all through a common interest in something basic and universal – sharing the sky.

Thanks for the update Deirdre.

In addition to this there is a special Photography Competition to coincide with InOMN:

Observe the Moon Night: Photo Contest
Perhaps you are an aspiring lunar photographer. Or perhaps you have been photographing the Moon for years. Either way, we’ve got a contest for you! Be a part of the 2010 International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) Photo Contest and you (or at least your photo) will become an InOMN legacy.

More information: observethemoonnight.org/getInvolved/contest

The competition will require flickr registration.
