Our guest speaker this month is John Flannery
His talk is entitled: “Charting the Heavens”:
This talk charts the development of the star atlas from the earliest times. We learn how the first attempts to describe star positions were cumbersome at best, when the first rudimentary charts were published, and how the golden age of the celestial atlas led to artistic masterpieces being produced. We then explore the next stage of development of the star atlas that went hand-in-hand with better instrumentation. We also learn about failed attempts to redraw the constellations and how astronomers finally de-cluttered the sky.
