Hello All,

The next IAS/SDAS talk will be in Gonzaga college on 10th February @ 8PM.

John Flannery will give a talk entitled "Supernovae: Changing the Cosmos".

"Supernovae herald the violent death of massive stars. But they also seed the Cosmos with material for star birth to begin anew. Virtually every element we find on Earth was forged in the heart of a star that was the precursor to our own Sun and the Solar System. We'll explore the life-cycle of stars that go supernova and learn how they have also changed our understanding of the Cosmos. Supernovae are used to measure the vast distances in the Universe and help determine whether the Universe will expand forever or contract in the distant future. They also helped shatter the belief in the immutable Heavens in the Middle Ages with the appearance of a new star in 1572. Learn more how Supernovae have changed the Cosmos through this talk."

Directions to Gonzaga are on the IAS website www.irishastrosoc.org .

Regards,

Michael
