Hope you get clear weather. Its a great venue regardless, with lots to do and see during the day. Some good fishing about 15 minutes up the road at Black head, Fanore beach, the Aran Islands, the Burren itself with its unique flora, great pubs and restaurants. Wish I could be there.
BTW Is anything happening at Birr this year? Haven't seen any posts.

Hi John.
Yea, weather is hit and miss but we're expecting the usual scope-bringers none the less.
Roy, Dave, Gordon & the lads also did huge local advertising with
papers, posters, radio so we're expecting a lot of general
public again which is always very nice (if sometimes a little daunting!)
Mostly the numbers dwindle away 11/12 ish
and it's just the diehards left to get on with it.

As for something in Birr
(I assume you mean Tony O Hanlon's Whirlpool Starparty)
I haven't a clue.
you'll have to ask Tony O Hanlon or Terry Mosley are they
running it this year, I doubt it though after the fiasco with the speakers not getting refunded for costs last year.
But again, I don't know.

Anyway,
if you win the Auzie lotto John before the weekend shur we'll see you there!

hi guys,

hope all is going well John for you in Australia. Hope everyone has a good time and clear skies at the BSP this weekend Frank -- I can't make it unfortunately this year due to a couple of things on in -cough- the "Big Smoke" (a small matter of Tipp in the All Ireland!!!)

I contacted Tony about the Whirlpool Star Party and he said it's unlikely there will be one this year, but didn't know if anyone else was planning anything. There's nothing listed on the Birr Castle site so I guess the WSP is on-hold as an astronomy weekend for the moment.

I've some info on another post about other events happening around the place. Also, not mentioned yet, but will be in my October event notes, is a series of World Space Week events in Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork. Shuttle astronomy Robert Kimbrough, who flew on STS-126 Endeavor, will speak at BCO -- see BCO for details

all the best,

john

No worries John.
Enjoy the match!
The Blackrock events look great.
Well worth a spin down.

Cheers Frank!

I forgot to mention that Dava Sobel ("Longitude", "Galileo's Daughter", etc) gave a talk at the Science Gallery in TCD last night. I didn’t know about it until Paul Nugent (in the Institute of Physics) texted me late on Monday night. I tried to get on the Science Gallery web site last week to see what events were coming up but it was giving an error for a few days. Such a pity I didn’t know in advance to tip off everyone, as she gave a great talk about her new book on Copernicus, “A More Perfect Heaven”. The middle of the book is actually a play so it’s quite unusual. More details at www.amazon.co.uk/More-Perfect-Heaven-Cop...id=1314776456&sr=8-1 -- her web site is davasobel.com

Dava mentions in her blog that she will be in Belfast after Dublin. I can’t find any reference as to where and when though! If anyone is in Belfast you could drop her a note via her web site and I'm sure she will pick it up.

atb,

john
