ScienceWeek2011 - Space Lectures/Resources/Events was created by albertw
Just got this from Anne Fitzpatrick
As you are probably aware ScienceWeek 2011 runs from 13-20 Nov with over 500 events around the country. This year’s theme is ‘The Chemistry of Life’, ESERO Ireland is delighted to highlight a number of space themed events, resources and lectures happening throughout Science Week 2011.
Science Week Lecture Series
We are delighted to welcome ESA astronaut Dr Christer Fuglesang currently Head of Science and Application Division within the Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Exploration at ESA. The Planetary Society, in association with School of Physics NUI Galway, Galway Astronomical Club and CIT/Blackrock Castle Observatory, Cork will present a media-rich talk in Dublin, Galway and Cork during Science Week Ireland 2011, titled ‘Mars Science Laboratory – In Search of Origins’. For details go to www.scienceweek.ie/features_2011_mars_laboratory.asp
There are numerous other Space and Astronomy events planned around the country so please check out your local events at www.scienceweek.ie/event_search.asp
Science Week Resources
A wide variety of resources are available online to support participation in ScienceWeek see ScienceWeek Resources
For secondary schools in particular we have developed the following space themed resources:
Gassy Skies
Our planet is surrounded by an invisible cloak of gases that we call the atmosphere. It is the atmosphere that gives us the air that we breathe and protects all life on Planet Earth. This worksheet includes activities such as Testing for Oxygen in the Classroom and How to Make Your Own Clouds, as well as facts about our atmosphere. Download Gassy Skies 636 kb pdf
Elemental Cosmos
Everything in the Universe is made up of the same elements. The most abundant element in the entire universe is Hydrogen. Hydrogen makes up three quarters of the matter of the cosmos, mostly in the form of clouds of gas and stars. This worksheet includes activities such as How to Make Hydrogen in the Classroom and Collecting your own Space Dust. It’s also packed with facts about Hydrogen. Download Elemental Cosmos 905 kb pdf
ESERO Ireland appreciates your help and support in promoting Space as theme to inspire and excite, please forward this email to anyone whom you think may be interested.
Regards,
Ann
