Wow, Pat. That is a tight double. Got to a website bestdoubles.wordpress.com
You will find that this is extremely difficult double to split. Component A is 4.8 and component B varies in brightness from 5.8 to 6.4. And at present in May 2012 the separation is 1.4". The website suggests one needs at least 225X, and someone else needing 300X. The separation does vary also over the decades very considerably. Over the foreseeble future, the stars are closing to their tightest. I read in Burham's Celestial Handbook, the stars can be at a mere 0.4" as they were back in 1969. I certainly will try to separate them at some stage soon. I do have a 4mm TMB eyepiece which gives 280X, and a 3.5mm Nagler which gives me 320X.
Thank you, Pat, for this information. Perhaps the skies will clear tomorrow night.

Aubrey, looks like it may be clear tonight so maybe we can
have a shot at splitting 44 Bootes. I have a 150mm reflector
I may try with it, or the 100mm Tal.

You on, Pat. I'll be setting the telescope before 9pm. After having a look at Venus, and Izar. I shall set out for 44 Bootis. You can set up a fresh post if you wish. If not, I shall tomorrow afternoon. Thank you so much, Pat, for the big challenge.
I have my finder chart at the ready.

Aubrey.
