Venus Ashen Light was created by flt158
Before we all hope to see the Transit of Venus, I wonder will it be possible to observe the Ashen Light of Venus. I am looking back to a 1993 diary, I had the privilege of seeing it that year when Venus less than 4% illuminated. Tonight it is 15% lit, and last night I felt it may beginning to appear again. Certainly, Venus has to be in a favourable high altitude position -just like it is this final month of its appearance.

Have you a favourite theory, Michael, as to what causes the Ashen Light?

There are a few explanations ranging from the interesting to the amusing.
These theories include volcanic activity, optical illusion and light pollution caused by the residents...
Personally, I think it is an optical illusion.

Im eating my words here,

I dont think it's an optical illusion, I have seen it many times, Damien Peach has imaged it. It is strange, but how many other things in the Universe are strange and not completely understood, its easy to suggest..aahh it must be an optical illusion. Here is a photo of mine from this evening, I can clearly see something strange.

Nice photo, Ronan. I wonder is it a case of those who have seen the Ashen Light believe they saw it and those who have never have seen it doubt its existence. All I can say is back in March 1993, I saw it with a 8.75" reflector. And a friend of mine was with me and he saw it too with me. I have never seen it since -possibly because I haven't had a low enough western horizon. So let's issue the challenge to keep observing Venus over the next 2 weeks. And if anyone sees it he or she can announce it on this website!
