It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of our esteemed honorary member, Brian Smyth.
Brian was a long-standing member of the NIAAS, and was a former Treasurer and Secretary.
His enthusiasm and curiosity about all aspects of life was an example to us all.
He never let his long-standing illness get him down. It is often said that people fight against illness. Brian didn't, he just ignored it, and got on with things. He played golf, sailed in his canoe, and went off on trips with his wife in their motor-home right up until the last couple of months.
He was always the first to ask questions at our meetings, He was one of our most regular attendees, and hated missing a meeting.
Brian will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.
We all count ourselves lucky and privileged to have known him, and to have called him a friend.

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better programs, and the universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning.

IFAS extends its condolences to Brian's family, friends and to all of his and our colleagues in NIAAS.
It is always with sadness that we let any of this community go. As a committed Astronomer and someone committed to enjoying life, he is someone we should all aspire to. He will be sorely missed.
May he go forth in the sunrise boat,
May he come to port in the sunset boat,
May he go among the imperishable stars,
May he journey in the Boat of a Million Years
