Crystal clear skies at 5am, but only saw three Leonids in a 45-minute spell, two quite faint and the other not particularly brilliant either. So roll on the next storm in 2099

Is it not every 33 years, making it 2032 or so ?

They don't happen every 33 years because the Earth doesn't encounter the orbit of Comet Swift-Tuttle at every return. So there was a gap between the showers of 1866 and 1966 eg, and similarly now for the rest of this century.
Edit: sorry that should be Tempel-Tuttle.

I saw two really bright fireballs around 5am on Monday morning on my way up to Ballina (near Galway). Quite a sight while driving.

I thought the 1966 Leonids was one of the greatest meteor showers ever witnessed (visible in the us at the time), ah well...
Oh course with meteor showers, we can say that past performance is not a guarantee of future returns

Meteor showers, comets and the planet Mars.
The three most over-rated, over-hyped and underwhelming things in astronomy.
