Just been doing up the A&S sky diary for May and came across this comet. Current predictions suggest a mag of between 4 and 6 when it comes closest to earth only 0.0735 AU on May 13th!!

There was some speculation that this comet may not even exist anymore after a breakup when it came to perihelion in 1995 but latest pictures shows its still going strong and brighter than expected. SOme of the fragments from the last perihelion still remain.

Better still, on May 8th at around 4am. This comet passes just 3.5' from M57. The coma may well occult M57!!!

Martin get yer comet observing coat on, we got a serious contender here!

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.

lol thanks Dave. I will be starting my observing programme of this comet in the next dark period. Theres talk of the comet reaching mag 3.5.

Hope it does!

coruscations attending the whole length of the luminosity, giving to the phenomena the aspect of a wrathful messenger, and not that of a tranquil body pursuing a harmless course..comet of 1680

Hopefully this one will be a show stopper! I knew about this one from last year, and currently it's still on track to show up naked eye, high in our skies in early summer...

Fingers crossed
