"There is a theory that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Another theory states that this has already happened."

The first image is actually historical.
It is the first observation of a"new" type of Solar System transit:
The transit of a Solar Prominence.
Near misses of the Sun by Mercury and Venus will never be ignored again by Astro-imagers!

Indeed the photo has attracted great interest. As he prepared for first contact he noticed it on his PC screen first and then started taking shots! The photo was taken at 15:05:38 UT give or take a couple of seconds. For the record.
Fred Bruenjes, who took this "rapidly becoming famous" photo of Mercury against the backdrop of a solar prominence has stated that he took 52,000 images of the transit, that's about 23 gigabytes apparently.
Now I was always told that good photographers take as many shots as possible and they are bound to have one award winning photo. But 52,000.....................

Brings back memories of the solar eclipse in Turkey. I was watching with my PST and could see the Moon passing in front of a prominence before it hit the disc. Amazing! Couldn't believe my luck!

That first image is truly historic. I suspect it will become a icon for astrophotography.
