Talking about the definition of a planet..........................

What is the definition of a moon?

What you mean is what's the definition of a satellite. We just happen to call ours the Moon. I guess basically it is any object locked in an orbit around another object, regardless of size. A red giant, for example, could be a satellite of a white dwarf, if it orbited around that white dwarf star (well, only if physics allowed, but you get my drift).

It's all a bit odd isn't it? When I learned about the planets Pluto was one of them and it had no known moons. Now it has three of them it's not a planet any more!

The only benefit of downgrading Pluto has been that I, along with many others, can now claim to have seen all the planets! But that's a bit like our friends across the pond who got children to eat more vegetables by redefining chips...... (True!)

Actually our moon is called Selene. We call it THE Moon because we only have one moon. If we had two moons we'd likely call one the Big Moon and the other the Weenchie Moon, or something similar. But of course, as all right thinking people know, the moon is simply a universal expression of disrespect or distain, usually deployed in a fit of drunken ribaldry and to great hilarity... though there are some who are above such base japery... and at whom the moon is usually directed!

Phil.

PS - Hands up anyone who has ever mooned The Moon?! :D

I've always wondered why our moon never had a nice name like the moons of other planets. Now i know differently. I will never call it the moon again.
