Wow, this is really gathering pace among solar system observers Mark, it seems though that it could have been spotted a few days before, and this ha happened in 1973 and 1990 it seems, all due to white clouds above the darker ones taht give the band it's distinct look..

Very odd. Maybe it's not a wonder seeing as we've only had photography for less than 80 years on to the stars to see a change like this. Jupiter has only been really 'studied' since the '30's right? What's to say that it goes through major changes in atmosphere every 80 years or so? Granted, this change Anthony caught seems a little more dramatic.

woow,!!! first of all, what a fabulous image.
Second, where the hell has the belt gone to!! :ohmy: , and why does this stuff always seem to happen when the planet is near the sun, from our point of view obviously,
Remember how a white belt appeared around the GRS last time the planet came out from behind the sun.
Now that will look a little odd through the eyepiece.!!! cant wait to see it
